Come. Don't be scared. Ok. So, purple prints. Yup, purple prints. Just check this out. Solange Knowles in Vera Wang looking incredible. Followed the next day by Joan Smalls in Prabal Gurung. From that collection that onse Candice Swanepoel is the face of. Smashing.
Anyway, you have been warned. Purple prints it is. Now I just need to go and find me some...

amfAR New York Gala Red Carpet Best Dressed

I just wanted to run you through some unexpected style statements from the amfAR gala that was held in New York a few days ago. There was plenty of sweeping Roberto Cavalli gowns of course (Klum, Hurley, et al), but the more interesting style statements came from different sources. All doing something interesting and inspiring were:
1. Liya Kebede, who went for masculine/feminine in a black and white ensemble that I think looks amazing on her. She didn't over-contrast it either with red heavy lips or super-high shoes, just played it straight for the boy-girl look. I love this.
2. My mate Alexa Chung mixed up some Louis Vuitton. Instead of taking a runway look and replicating it on the red carpet, she mixed and matched from different looks to put this outfit together. I like the personalising of the runway. It makes for a much more interesting outcome.
3. Rose Byrne certainly kept things moderate, compared to her Elie Saab jumpsuit, but this Alexander McQueen fitted frock and wavy hair is by no means an expected look. I think she definitely pulled it off and it looks great - not too try-hard, which is a total pleasure.
4. And yes, Sarah Jessica Parker. I almost never like what she wears (I know, my fault), but this is rather spectacular. If one leaves off the Madonna-esque gloves of course. But that high contrast of sugary pink Oscar de la Renta gown with the leather biker jacket gets my vote. Every time. I am a sucker for this kind of situation. Well played SJP.

Diane Kruger in Giambattista Valli and Derek Lam in Berlin

I am a huge admirer of Diane Kruger's style. I even overlook the fact that she has ensnared my husband, Pacey Witter, and is living happily ever after with him, simply because she is one of the most successfully adventurous actresses around. She is always on trend - but in that way that is slightly twisted and just before everyone else. She is always beautiful - it's just the way she was made.

And yesterday, as she opened the 2012 Berlin Film Festival, she continued to look wonderful, unexpected, glossy and bright. First in Derek Lam stripes and prints, and then later the evening in a gloriously surprising polka dot Giambattista Valli black gown. Stunning.

Alexa Chung Covers UK Elle March 2012

One of my favourite things about seeing new magazine covers with Alexa Chung on them, is seeing which decade or style she is going to channel. This latest cover - of the UK Elle for March 2012 - takes a stab at the 60s with a twist of exaggerated nowness. The oversized Louis Vuitton crochet collars. The contrast colour lace. All very modern. With the traditional of 60s moderism in place. It's like a bit of a lesson in the history of fashion.

What do you think of this spread? Do you like it or are you over vintage-inspired Alexa moments? I know there are some of you out there who don't share my adoration of all things Alexa - but even so, this is a fresh and very summer 2012 fashion story, right? Let me know.

Rachel McAdams' Shades of Blue

I am warning you now...a trend alert is around the corner when it comes to shades of blue. It has been ages since light blue has been en vogue and I can feel it in my bones, it is a hair's breadth away from a fully developed wardrobe must-have. Just take the last couple of weeks'outfits from actress Rachel McAdams (aka the girl who let Ryan Gosling get away). Starting with a gentle off-white from Andrew Gn, she moved into a sherbet blue from Vivienne Westwood, a striped Peter Som dress and Roland Mouret coat into a full fledged print from Peter Som. All in one go. All in shades of the most wondrous blue. Getting a case of the blues is about to take on a new meaning, fashion folks. Do you like it?

Thandie Newton in Osman and Stella McCartney

So where the devil has Thandie Newton been for the past year or so? Anyone? Anyone? Wherever she disappeared off to, boy is she back this week. She turned up to two events in the past week - looking sensational both times. First of all in a black, Grecian, draped, asymmetric column of Osman beauty - accessorised in gold.

And then in a cute - if even more asymmetric - vibrant turquoise cocktail number by Stella McCartney. As a lady who had a penchant for those weirdly big ball gowns that dwarfed her petite frame, it is such a pleasure to see Zim-girl Thandie in clean, easy lines that look amazing on her. Letting her natural beauty shine through with simplicity and comfort. This, for me, is perfection. How about you?

Eva Mendes Covers US Marie Claire March 2012

The magazine stand is a super competitive place this month, with some cracking covers competing for the wallets of us devoted followers of fashion. The US Marie Claire sees stunning Eva Mendes cover the issue. And doesn't she look all kinds of awesome, hmmmm.

Inside she talks about her new relationship with arguably the hottest guy on the planet, Ryan Gosling. I am guessing that is going to be enough to sell plenty of this issue. Even I want to know more about what it must be like to date RG. Lovoing the styling of the inside story too. Awesome.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, Wears High Street to First Solo Public Engagement

One of my favourite places in the world are the hallowed halls of the National Portrait Gallery in London. I have spent many happy hours there. So imagine how delighted I was when Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, decided that it was to be one of her first patronages and public engagements. Alone. Without her husband at her side. Yay.

And so it was for the opening of the Lucien Freud exhibition last night, where Kate turned up in a stylish swing dress coat, in grey wool, belted, and paired with a pair of her usual Jimmy Choos.
The dress coat was by high street brand Jesire, and was probably purchased from David Jones on Sloane Square. And didn't she look lovely. Appropriately pretty but casual for an art gathering and fitted beautifully. It didn't set the world on fire, but nor should it have. As usual, somehow without explaination, it was a perfectly pitched ensemble. Well played Kate. Again.

Usually I start the day with my favourite posts, which usually feature people like Duchess Kate or my book club mate, Victoria Beckham. And then there are days when I like to save the best till last. Such as today. So just look here. Vicky B in her cute as anything tartan mini kilt (I am pretty sure it is by Mulberry), paired with her burgundy cropped jumper with the black Peter Pan collar by Miu Miu. I mean I die. How awesome. Seriously. Gimme. That's all. As you were.
PS: VB is off to New York fashion week. I. Can't. Wait. For her new collection. And breathe.

Academy Awards Nomination Lunch and Michelle Williams Wears Victoria, Victoria Beckham

Ah, I do love it when celebs dress in Victoria Beckham. There is even a rumour going around the Twitterverse that there are a few actresses who will be wearing VB to the Oscars. Really? How exciting for everyone involved, I would think. Meanwhile, at the nominees luncheon held earlier this week, Michelle Williams kicked it all off with the 'rain cloud' dress from the Victoria, Victoria Beckham line. And was happily accompanied by fabulous ladies Viola Davis in beight pink Juan Carlos Obando and the divine Melissa McCarthy.

Also in attendance and looking sublime was Rooney Mara in an ASOS jumpsuit and Theirry Mugler jacket (wow, guys) and Octavia Spencer looking EVEN BETTER than both the last times she looked amazing. Seriously. What is this woman going to wear to the Oscars if this is how she looks that the pre-lunch thingimijig? And of course, the ever elegant and mind blowing Meryl Streep. Go ladies.

Beyonce in Temperley London

I don't often publish images of Beyonce. Mostly because she saves her hottest looks for the stage and keeps a relatively low profile outside of that. And of course, because she has tended to wear her House of Dereon line to functions, which is not to my taste. But look at this va-va-va-voom situation we have all up in here. Queen B in blazing red Temperley London as she stepped out to support Jay-Z at Carnegie Hall on Monday evening.
Now as you will all know, Temperley London is the much-loved label of Pippa and Kate Middleton. And one StyleGuideCT. It is not necessarily the territory of American R&B superstars. And let's also all remember that wee Blue Ivy Carter was worn all of about a month ago. So I am going to go ahead and say WOW. Clever, clever Beyonce with that ruching and proportion. And doesn't she just look fantastic. Brilliant lady.

This is not the first time I have posted images from a Boy. by Band of Outsiders campaign look book. The last one featured Kirsten Dunst on a sunny day in LA, shot on polaroid by the designer Scott Sternberg. And this one is of it-actress and ideal boy-girl person Michelle Williams. I know, I should be bored of same-old. I know it is cliched and hipster-obvious to use the Hollywood Forever Cemetery and the Hitchcock-style hearse. I know, I know. But look how cute it is.
And there is nothing I adore more in ready-to-wear fashion than feminine boyish style with an edge of hipster cool. Which makes me terminally uncool, but who cares.

And seriously, is there a cute, blonde actress alive better suited to this than Michelle? I don't think so.

This is actually the second time that Michelle has starred in a Boy. by Band of Outsiders campaign. The last time was just after her last Oscar roundabout, in 2008. And it worked perfectly, of course. As does this one.

Last week saw a run on pastel flavoured outfits. Everyone was in on the action. And in a hemisphere suffering from a cold snap. But fashion waits for no sun, and so pastels are in, and we get to take advantage right here in the sunny southern hemisphere. Yay us. It all started with Blake Lively who busted out the Valentino beautifully early in the week. Michelle Williams came up quickly from behind in her sublime floral Erdem frock. And you have already seen Michelle Obama do it in J.Crew. The message is clear. Pastels are in and you need to get on board. Now go!

Elizabeth Banks Covers US Women's Health March 2012

So while pretty Kate Beckinsale is covering the launch issue of Women's Health in the UK for March 2012, one of my new favourite actresses, Elizabeth Banks is front and centre, looking all wholesome American blonde on the cover of the US Women's Health. Not that Elizabeth Banks is a new actress, obviously, just newly endeared to me via the medium of 30Rock.

Anyway, whilst I am not that crazy about the cover (just keeping it real dawg), I do really, really love the interior shot of Elizabeth in the red vest. In fact it inspires me to do some stuff of my own. Yay.

EB is in three different movies at the moment, playing very diverse roles. And it is getting her the kind of kudos and respect that sticks around for a while. Which is good news because it means that her cute and sassy style will also be sticking around. Double yay.

Women's Health magazine has just launched in the UK. Good for them. It's a great title. And on the cover of the launch issue is Kate Beckinsale, actress and friend of Victoria Beckham. Well, that's how I see her. And she is so darn pretty. And nearly forty years old. Amazing really, right?

I am particularly fond of the more fun side of her. But she seems to do really strange futuristic action type flicks. Which obviously I don't see. So it has been ages since I watched a movie with her in it. Actually, now that I come to think of it, I actually realise that Pearl Harbour was the last one I had the misfortune to catch. Oh dear. Now what?

Well she is jolly pretty. And probably great fun. And a nice person. And very, very pretty. So it is all ok and we shall move along swiftly. Good.

Viola Davis Covers LA Times Magazine

Oh. My. Word. It isn't often that I just stop and stare. As someone who spends about four hours a day, everyday, on the picture and news feeds, I am not often utterly gobsmacked by a set of images. But these incredible pics of Oscar nominated actress Viola Davis for LA Times Magazine from the weekend, made my week. How bloody stunning?!

With her natural hair, her beautiful features just highlighted with a hint of make up and and her glorious skin bronzed and glistening, Viola looks ten years younger and more gorgeous than models half her age. Seriously. Have you ever seen a transformation like this.

it's not that she doesn't always look lovely. It's just that this is exceptional. Dressed in Marchesa on the cover, Jason Wu in that standing picture and a smattering of Theirry Mugler, Viola makes a powerful fashion statement, Unexpected and a real treat. Yay Viola. Rock on.

Alexander McQueen on the Red Carpet: Cate Blanchett and Zoe Saldana

I always like it when you see a designer's range being represented well on the red carpet. And no label deserves it more than Alexander McQueen. Fresh off the SAG Awards where Emma Stone wore that dress to perfection, we popped over to Sydney where the sublime Cate Blanchett wore a gold Alexander McQueen dress and made alien and fashion come together in perfect harmony.

And then this weekend, the delectable Zoe Saldana (by all accounts dating the smoochable Bradley Cooper) wore a daring, sexy, constrained, gothic confection of a McQueen in black with a gold belt. And looked outstanding, don't you think? Which one wins for you? My heart still belongs to Emma, I think, but that gold vision runs a very close second.

Michelle Obama Style Update: Including Michael Kors and Duro Olowu

I have always liked Michelle Obama's style. I love how she took FLOTUS style and turned it on its head whilst losing nothing of the respect for her position. She made it contemporary and fresh. She brought fashion back to the White House. And she has kick-started the careers of several designers. Including that of African designer Duro Olowu. She wore one of their tops in her get-down-and-boogie with Ellen last week, together with a black leather jacket from Reed Krakoff.

Other outfits that really sang on Mrs O's trip to California include the J.Crew skirt and Michael Kors gold top. Love the high-low combination, the rewear of the skirt and the light sherbet colours that are SO right now.

Also there was this fantastic colour blocking look, pairing Michael Kors wool trousers with an Ann Taylor jacket. And her favourite Jimmy Choo shoes, of course. Fabulous, fresh fashion from the First Lady. You know I am praying that the election goes Obama's way....

Lana del Rey Covers UK Vogue March 2012

I have posted quite a lot about new it-girl singer Lana del Rey over the last couple of weeks. And I have told you all about the mixed reviews she is getting. And mostly about how I am loving her style. Because you see, while I am passionate about music, what I really invest my irrelevant, time-wasting energies into is fashion and style. And this girl has style in buckets. Possibly over her talent...I said possibly...and I am ok with that.

And now look-e-here. She has landed a Vogue cover. That is pretty hard hitting for a new girl on the block. You have to have something kinda special to get those kinds of props.

She is wearing a Louis Vuitton dress on the cover, which is super pretty. And inside she is wearing that devine Prada playsuit that is rediculous and fabulous all at the same time. She also wears this pair of Kylie-tiny silver shorts by Giambattista Valli and the blouse by Viktor + Rolf. And gets away with it all. A true style maven. even if you don't dig her beat.

It's been quite a week for my mate Victoria Beckham. Quite aside from her hubby stripping down to his knickers for all the world to see, she has snared the cover of edgy magazine i-D, and her other range Victoria, Victoria Beckham, has sold out at Harvey Nicholls after just a couple of days. Amazing.

Inside i-D, Vicky B talks about her relationship with her body and how that has influenced her clothing designs - insightful from someone that many wrote off as superficial.

She is also in a series of beautiful shots by Josh Olins wearing Rochas and Balmain. I am not afraid to tell you all - like you don't already know - I think that VB rocks. Hard. Like a boss.

Inside she rocks it out a bit and talks about her love life and lack of nautiness - and how she ploughs that all into her work on Gossip Girl and the movies she does.

Of course the delightful Blake is dating Ryan Reynolds at the moment. Who would want to be naughty with anyone else when you have Ryan and his puppies to play with, hmmm? Exactly.

Now you all know how much love I have for onse Charlize Theron. I think that she is stunning and talented and we are awfully proud. Just like Candice Swanepoel. Only even more. Obviously. But here she is. Subjugated to the Terry Richardson treatment, just like fellow blonde Gwyneth and fellow Saffa Candice, before her. This time for Vanity Fair.

Which is weird of course, because it looks almost exactly the same as the Harpers Bazaar shoots. In the same month. In the same country. On the same sales stand. I believe the young use the term 'epic fail' to describe this kind of thing, no?

But she still loooks awfully pretty.

Candice Swanepoel by Terry Richardson for US Harpers Bazaar

It seems like it is a Terry Richardson kind of week. A bunch of his shoots are coming out now (like that Gwyneth Paltrow one yesterday for US Harpers) and now here is another one for US Harpers Bazaar - like this whole issue was shot by Mr TR. Except that this one features onse very own South African Angel model, Candice Swanepoel. In a variety of sexy sports poses.

So, no marks for originality of concept on this one then. Nor do we deviate from the Terry Richardson formula of white walls, sketchy lighting and sex implication throughout.

Labels in this shoot include Stella McCartney, Lanvin, Michael Kors and Calvin Klein. Not unlike Candice's last sports shoot. Except of course this one is cleaner looking, but even more filthy in intent.

Styling has been done by Brana Wolf and does the trick. You know. It's fine. No surprises here.

Are we over these kinds of shoots? I mean Candice is a beautiful girl and we are beyond proud of her and her achievements. I just want a bit more from it all now. Something beyond pretty girl looking sexy. I guess I am just over Terry Richardson. How about you?

Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2012

I remember when I first saw a movie with Monica Bellucci in it. I was at University about 100 years ago and was awfully serious about FILM. Generally I would only watch sub-titled European psycho-sexual masterpieces. And it was in all that, that I met the wonderous Monica. And I truly thought I had never seen such a beautiful woman before. I wanted to be just like her. And I still do. Look at her in the latest campaign from Dolce & Gabbana for Spring 2012.

Monica is of course the older lady in black. Bianca Balti is the other one. The potential daughter-in-law maybe? The one that is going to steal away the son of the Italian matriarch. Ah, the portrayal of Italian family life are deep and rich and fun and beautiful. And there is a part of all of us that wants to be a member of that family!

The campaign was shot by Giampaolo Sgura in southern Italy and are supposed to depict Sunday best. In a time when you still saved your most glorious dresses for church. Magnificent.

Gwyneth Paltrow for US Harpers Bazaar, by Terry Richardson

Gwyneth Paltrow and I have had an on-off relationship. I really couldn't stomach the whole smugness thing for many years. And then she made a gently honed performance in Glee and I had to shift all my preconceptions. I still couldn't do the whole lifestyle preach, but I can admit that she is quite funny, very pretty and knows a thing or two about style - although does try too hard every so often.

So we are good. The only problem is that there is a new irritation. The one where she wants to convince us that she is a beer-swilling, belching, swearing, sex pot. Nooooo. Just be a lovely organic person and we can all be ok.

I don't know. Maybe it is my problem. Maybe I want her to be less complex and 'interesting'. Maybe. I don't think so. I think part of her prettiness comes from her refined elegance. Take that away and it is damaged and off-kilter.

So the combination of Terry Richardson and Gwyneth Paltrow from Harpers Bazaar US is a weird one for me. It just doesn't sit right. She looks great, of course. Hard not to when you are that pretty. But there is something not quite right about a lady of 40 pulling her dress up through her legs. Am I being a prude?

Christina Hendricks for Cosmopolitan UK March 2012

The new issue of the UK Cosmopolitan for March 2012 features the delectable Christina Hendricks on the cover. I have recently been watching back-to-back episodes of Mad Men and I am renewed in my admiration for this woman and her subtle portrayal of a woman of such fullness.

Now there have been some styling problems recently for Christina. And sometimes she is a bit hit and miss on the red carpet. Often this is blamed on her figure. But since her figure is magnificent, I have to assume that they should be blaming it on the designers. I mean, really. Look at her. Stunning.

I think that this firey red-head takes risks and tries things out and is less bothered by what other people may think of these experimentations. I think that this says more about her style that anything a fashion commentator or stylist could. I am increasingly in awe.

Reese Witherspoon for UK Glamour Magazine March 2012

I like Reese Witherspoon well enough. In fact I have thoroughly enjoyed several of her movies including Election, Legally Blonde and Walk the Line. And her style is clear, which I respect. Clean, simple, achievable and nicely on-trend. It works for the suburbs in the nicest possible way.

But I think that I may prefer this styling for her. Here in the latest issue of the UK Glamour Magazine, for March 2012, Reese is softly and subtly styled in the fashion of the late 50s/early 60s. Both in attitude and props. I love it. It says much about a growing tolerance in fashion for simple prettiness, which has for years been undervalued.

I think it is lovely. What do you guys think?

Lana del Rey for Interview Magazine February 2012 - The Inside Story

So you have seen the covers of the February Issue of Interview Magazine, featuring Lana del Rey. Now look inside. I mean, seriously. How freaking stunning?

With a strong 60s influence, and some whacked-out twists, this is a brilliant style interpretation of her music, in my view.

I may be no music reviewer, but I did like her first couple of singles very much (video games and blue jeans) and I think that these images are exceptionally stylish and beautiful. I therefore must declare that I remain a fan. How about you? Do these images do it for you?

It's kinda strange. Brand new it-girl singer Lana del Rey, whose album has just been released, is on the cover of two international editions of Interview magazine this month. That's not the strange bit. The strange bit is that the covers are the same but different.

Differently cropped - tighter in for the German version, more wide angled with hair for the Russian version. I'm not sure which I prefer. Which one do you prefer?

Lana's debut album, Born to Die, has received very mixed reviews. Mostly not great. It is one part backlash, one part too high expectation, and one part personal taste in my view. Not that I have heard it you understand, just I think that the whole hype thing got out of control. And she is so pretty and dresses nicely, so I am totally biased.

I mean look at her in the streets of Paris yesterday, looking all kinds of young-girl-chic, in her classic trench and ballet pumps. Lovely.

Candice Swanepoel and Behati Prinsloo Play Ball

I showed you an image of the two African Angels on the beach in St Barts yesterday. And here they are again, Behati Prinsloo and Candice Swanepoel playing beach bats and eating hotdogs yesterday as their shoot for Victoria Secret came to an end.

I think that it is adorable how great these girls get on - and even more adorable is that cool fedora that Candice is wearing. Yes please. I'll have one of those. The great natural beauty reall shines through in these images taken without the aid of hair and makeup and lighting. Sigh.

And for all you peeps out there that think that being a stylist is a glamorous job, I thought that it was importnat to show you this image from the VS shoot. Stylists get to be the people who have to rub cream on models arses. Yes, that is how glamorous the job is. When you are not lugging twelve tons of photographic equipment and props across the sand in 40 degree heat. Just saying. Time to adjust any misconceptions that you may have... Good. And breathe out....

Candice Swanepoel for Prabul Gurung Spring 2012

We are having a bit of a Candice Swanepoel moment right now in the fashion world. She really is dominating. Yesterday saw the release of the campaign images for Prabul Gurung Spring 2012 - featuring a very brunette, twisted and tortured Candice, in shades of lilac print.

The photographer for this campaign was Daniel Jackson, and Tiina Laakkonen styled the shoot. I like the high contrast shades and the unexpectedness of the hair. The body shapes remind me of Sophie Dahl's Opium campaign, but we are told that it was inspired by artist Nobuyashi Araki’s photographic series, “Sensual Flowers”.

Hosted by the lovely Blake Lively, wearing main line Jason Wu, the diffusion, well-priced on-trend fashion line by designer Jason Wu launched last week at the supermarket chain in America, Target. I can't believe how lovely Blake is looking. Must be that Ryan Reynolds twinkle in her eyes... But I do think that she probably should have worn something from the Target line as it appears to be a real delight of fashionable items.

Both Jamie King and young Chloe Moretz wore items from the diffusion range and looked all kinds of cute and adorable. Now how do we get some of that stuff all the way over here in Africa, mmm?

I always say to you guys that I think that Taylor Swift has great personal style. I like seeing her un-styled (if you know what I mean), off-duty and in a little something she threw together herself. It gives us insight into her ability to be as creative with an outfit as she is with her music (well, I think so, I don't really know what her music sounds like). Yesterday she was foraging in a vintage market in LA, wearing old-school crochet, which she teamed with that cool leather belt and shoes. And looked somehow perfect. And very true to herself.

Taylor has just returned from London where she wore this delightful ASOS dress and leather jacket to visit Princess Diana's memorial. She also hung out in her skinny jeans and duffle coats (back next winter), brogues and some very interesting boots. So I genuinely want to know, who is with me on this? T-Swizzle for the style win?

2012 SAG Awards Red Carpet: Worst Dressed

Sometimes the worst dressed is more interesting than the best dressed, and so it was with the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet. I am not putting these out there to be mean, simply to highlight some mistakes that others can possibly avoid going forward, if you know what I mean. And a little bit of entertainment, of course, for you my loyal readers. Starting with that black Jenny Packham dress that Angelina Jolie wore and everyone wet themselves in excitement on the Twitter. What? Really? I mean this is black and draped and not a huge leap from a black bin liner. It is about the cheapest fabric one can choose. So why would one? Take the beauty and glow of Angie out of this equation and the dress is a sack. There I said it. And the glorious Meryl Streep. Oh dear. No. That belt. It's Vivienne Westwood. But no. Soz. Diane Lane deserves better. The fabric is as tacky as that bubble gum under the table at the Wimpy. And the lopsided boob-a-thon? Asymmetric to be avoided if you are over a C-cup and there is no built in bra. There's a top tip for you.

And whilst the delightful Kristen Wiig is just a peach and I love her, I can't get over the choker necklace. Which is also skew. Lovely, lovely Balenciaga dress, shame about the neckpiece, no? And Lea Michele. Sigh. This girl has the worst habit of taking a seemingly nice dress and making it look, well, just a bit off. I mean that split just looks weird on her. And with all the over-the-top posing and gurning and general strange red carpet behaviour, this splendid little silver slip of a dress, just goes wrong. No thanks. Which one was worst for you? 2012 SAG Awards Red Carpet: Best Dressed

It was hard to pick my best of the best on the red carpet at the 2012 SAG Awards. Not one single dress made me gasp out loud. I do hope it is because they are all saving their best for the BAFTAs and the Oscars. But there were three that I found interesting and beautiful enough to make my picks. First there was Michelle Williams in classic red Valentino. with a twist. Asymmetric. Lace. Bold and daring. What a refreshing dose of fashion change that is. Lovely. And then there was Zoe Saldana in Givenchy haute couture. Oh. My. Goodness. I freaking love Givenchy on her. It works. And then there was Emma Stone, who could have got onto the top picks by virtue of her amazing accessories alone - loving the knuckle-duster bag and the charming shoes. But her Alexander McQueen gown aint half bad either. She is just awesomeness. J'dore.
If I am pressed, I will choose Zoe in Givenchy as my favourite favourite. What about you?

2012 SAG Awards Red Carpet Best Dressed in Light and Dark

Let's face it. There were A LOT of dresses on the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet that were either a shade of white or a permutation of black. Some worked and a whole lot didn't. Let's start with a classic drape that definitely worked, Tilda Swinton in Lanvin. Stunningly simple and beautifully fitted. Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji showed once again that the lady knows how to dress, how to look beautiful and elegant, whilst having a ball. Now this one is controversial. Rose Byrne in a Elie Saab jumpsuit. Every time I look at it I love it more. It's an attitude combined with exquisite workmanship. I know you won't all agree, but I have to share with you my joy. Love it. And then there was the stunning Julianna Margulies in embellished Calvin Klein. Looking utterly sublime, if awfully skinny and wan. It doesn't look healthy but it sure looks pretty.

Now let's go over to the dark side. I am perplexed by Natalie Portman's Giambattista Valli deep burgundy dress. Pretty in theory though. I adore Jane Krakowski's dress. Possibly a tad too much of the boobage, but the dress holds its own against the others on the red carpet and still comes off looking like one of the best. And her cast-mate Tina Fey continues to look elegant and my crush on her continues unabated, before we finally settle on Amber Heard in a classic Roland Mouret black cut out dress. Lovely. Not entirely smashing it all, but lovely. Well played ladies.

2012 SAG Awards Red Carpet: Best Dressed in Colour

Yay. Another awards show red carpet. Love these. I haven't seen many of the frocks from the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet yet in motion - I do prefer to make my selections based on photos and 'in real life' - but let's have a go and maybe chat tomorrow if there are any major problems. Starting with the riot of colour on the carpet this year. It makes for a much more exciting display and allows us to pick out colour trends, rather than the interminable black dress after white dress after black dress. You know. So the first thing to note is the new trend alert for colour: fuschia. Stunning on Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang, Dianna Agron and that stunning Temperley London dress on Julie Bowen. I am sold on the colour and want a silk dress for myself. Please. Thanks.

Then we need to talk about these stunning colour creations, starting with the emerald Oscar de la Renta dress on Emily Blunt. Then the classicly simple blue Calvin Klein on Jessica Chastain. And finally the sexy Emilio Pucci on Kyra Sedgewick. If we can just overlook the old lady showing her new tattoo, which I find impossibly vulgar. But she looks stunning.
I do hope the Oscar ladies are taking notes. This is how to stand out on a bust red carpet. Done.

Louis Vuitton Spring Summer 2012 is Ice Cream Prettiness

Set in an ice-cream parlour in an undefined time, Marc Jacobs, scalloped femininity and peter pan collars charm us with their sweetness. I mean, I super-love a peter pan collar. Anyone who knows me, knows this. And I am as smitten by sweet as I am by twisted. So this works for me on a level that probably surprises you. I love the lightness, the sugary disposableness of it all. And it says vintage, whilst being totally modern. Brilliant. If you can see it.

The models are Daria Strokous and Kati Nescher and it was shot by Mert + Marcus, of course. And it is a triumph of a campaign. Just the ticket to lift you as you turn a page of a fashion magazine.

Over the past couple of weeks, all the spring/summer 2012 campaigns have been launched. And there are a lot of very beautiful ones. But my favourites have been rare gems hidden amongst the rest. Like this one for Calvin Klein Jeans, starring of course Lara Stone. How I love Lara.
I will tell you what I also love. I love the jeans themselves. Not the fit, you understand, because I am quite sure I wouldn't fit my left toe in a pair, but the colour. How I have come to love colour.

We always like to keep up with our local girl made good, Candice Swanepoel, as she shoots some of the most exciting fashion around the world. Well, she is one of the top ten models in the world for the past two years. And just when you think that you have seen every side to her, every awesome angle and interpretation, we get something fresh. I couldn't believe it when I saw this spread for Vogue China. I mean how it it even possibly to be so simultaneously FILTHY and GLAMOROUS??

I know a lot of you like to see these stories because Candice is still just a chick from the midlands. One of us. Although an unbelievably pretty one. But for the fashion purists that read the blog, let me tell you that the sports luxe garments shown here are from Stella McCartney, Alexander Wang, Balenciaga, Narciso Rodriguez amongst others. As you would largely expect.

Daniel Jackson did the trigger pressing, Alastair McKimm did the clothes styling, hair was by Yadim and this incredible make up situation was by Yannick D'is. Amazing, right?

36Magazine Vamps It Up

I know, I know. It is all a bit weird me posting on my own work. But I so seldom love it a couple of months after I shot it, that this is a rare occasion. I love this work. I am actually quite proud of it. And I hope you love it too. Yesterday we went live with the February issue of our digital magazine - for 36Boutiques, the online fashion retailer. And it was all about twisted love just in time for Valentine's Day. You know, the whole vampire thing. And our obsession with dresses. And shoes.

We shot some of these dresses that are currently on sale on the site. I mean we all know what it is like at this stage of the year. We stand in front of our wardrobes and stare at the contents and think we have nothing to wear because we are just so damn bored of it all. But we still have another three months of summer to go. So pick up a stunning local designer dress for like R600 and reenergise your choices. (Anthony Friend shot this story at Crystal Towers, and the model is Lotte from Max)

But I am a darker and more sinister kind of person (it's the old goth in me) and I like a bit of a high contrast between love and hate, light and dark, and I am obsessed with the soundtrack to True Blood (who hasn't been there, "I wanna do bad things to you"). So we took ourselves off to the bowels of artist Conrad Hicks' studio at the Bijou Theatre and got down and grubby in red. I just blogged last week about how I have recently developed a bit of a soft spot for actress Elizabeth Banks due to her amazing turn in 30Rock. And then she popped out on the red carpet all over the place promoting her film Man on a Ledge, and wearing Versace and others. Brilliant. Alexa Chung Named Creative Director of Superga

I have blogged a few times before about my love of Alexa Chung and my love of Superga sneakers. And how they came together last year in this shoot, when Alexa was named the face of the brand. Ah, the bliss, the bliss. And then this week Alexa was named as the creative director of the brand, and continuing her duties as the face of it too. Well done lady!
Alexa was seen earlier this week attending her friend Henry Holland's launch for Superga, looking her usual hipster cool. And before that she was over in the US, attending the Chanel party in Vegas. Dressed, quite obviously in Chanel.

SA Model Katryn Kruger Opens and Closes Valentino Haute Couture SS12

Most of you will know what a big deal it is for a model to be chosen as the 'face' of a haute couture collection. You are chosen to set the tone for the collection and to leave the lasting impression. You come out first to show what the industry can expect, and you close the show in the final garment to remind the carefully watching industry of exactly how the designer conceptualised the collection. It is a very, very big deal. And yesterday Cape Town school girl (and face of Prada's SS12 collection) Katryn Kruger did exactly that for haute couture house Valentino.

The fact that I didn't love the Laura-Ashley-esque collection from Valentino is neither here nor there. Our girl was amazing. And that wasn't all. As far as I can tell so far, Katryn also walked for Giambattista Vallie in that haute couture show, managing to navigate the ramp in that ginormous floral arrangement!

And Katryn walked for favourite favourite Elie Saab yesterday in these beautiful creations that I love and adore. What a triumph for a young woman who hasn't even been working for a year yet. We can all be incredibly proud of her achievements and celebrate yet another amazing talent from right here in Cape Town. Yay Katryn.

So the latest singing sensation, Lana del Rey, is in London town at the moment. Adopting the habits of the natives, she was forced to apologise on air yesterday as she used the term f**king hell. Really? I guess the BBC still can't be real. But the backlash has begun, as one can imagine is inevitable. Aside from the whole 'authenticity' debate, peeps are not keen on her off-duty vibe. I'm not sure I am either to be fair. Wet look jeans and high tops? Not very sexy.

But the dress she wore on Saturday Night Live was stunning and she looked amazing. Pity then that the performance was baa-aa-aad. It was all over the twitter machine. I feel so sorry for the girl. Give her a chance guys! She is not going to be Adele or Amy or even Duffy. She is going to be her and it is going to take some time. Or not. But the album is due out any moment now and it is going to sell. And she generally looks good.

Michelle Obama in Barbara Tfank at State of the Union Address

I love that Michelle Obama has made such a determined effort to stay true to her own style over the course of her stay at the White House. She revolutionised through style. She deflected criticism through keeping it real. She shone when she needed to. And through it all her style has always been deeply personal. A pin here from her husband. A belt there that she loved. And so it was at one of the toughest parts of Barak Obama's reign as president, she donned an electric blue dress by favoured designer Barbara Tfank, and pinned a beautiful brooch to it. Because that it was she does. Stunning.

But then Mrs O has been looking particularly good of late. At the BET Awards in J.Mendel. At the MLK shenanigans and at the Baseball thingamajig. Great outfit, after great outfit. All very 'her' in the consistency of the cardigan (this beaded one by L'Wren Scott), the brooch, the getting those arms out, the bright and bold colour. I would be very, very sad to see Obama go at the next election. For a million reasons. Not least of which, his wife's style. What do you think?

Attending the Paris Haute Couture shows is usually the preserve of the actresses who are very serious about their commitment to fashion. Diane Kruger, for example. But this year sees an altogether much more athletic and entertaining actress in the front row. Cameron Diaz.

Are you as surprised as I am? Totally unexpected. And a tiny bit weird. Even on her huge global summer tour last year in support of Bad Teacher, she didn't wear any haute couture. It was all slinky dresses and then some casuals, if I remember correctly. rewearing pieces like jeans and shoes.

And yet yesterday, she stepped out in Paris at both the Atelier Versace (black outfit) and the Christian Dior (dotty dress) shows, obviously wearing the labels. And she looked great. Not jaw dropping, but good. And then she popped on her jeans and looked even better. That's what I mean. #justsaying

And second, I enjoyed the movie Jane Eyre more than almost every other film last year (except Bridesmaids). And so here we are, with Australian actress Mia Wasikowska who played Jane starring in the new Miu Miu campaign for spring summer. And it exceeds all my expectations

Shot by David Sims, themed around a modern interpretation of Alice in Wonderland, this is a triumph of matching person with mood with style with brand. Unexpected, amusing, whimsical and capturing the zeitgeist, well played Miu Miu. And I am stuill deeply in love with that bag...

Trend Alert: Leather Trousers

So it all began, as dubious trends often do, with Sharon Stone. I saw her in leather trousers. And I gasped. I mean this chick is in her 60s and she paired them with leopard print. It was yet another validation of the existence of the Sharon Stone Express - the fastest track to the style purgatory for those who are mutton dressed as lamb. And yet, I actually thought she looked great. I tussled with this condundrum. As I was tussling, so to speak, I caught a glimpse of the glorious Rosie Huntington Whiteley. Also in leather trousers. Also styled with a dose of leopard print. And something whispered 'trend' to me. Next thing you know, there is the pinacle of retrained style, Kate Beckinsale, also in leather trousers, and the trend came alive. A Frankenstein one for sure, but a trend never-the-less. Leather pants, gang. This winter we will all be wearing them. Whether we should or not. Not only that, but it has already started to diffuse. This weekend Alexa Chung, hipster trend setter, was wearing leather shorts, the next stage of the leather style evolution. Noted, people, noted. But I think for everyone's sake, I may forego this trend. But you guys need to carefully consider it. It is a trend for sure. Over to you.

It is the 2012 Sundance Film Festival on right now and it reminds me that we met (so to speak) the lovely smiley version of the Olsens, Elizabeth Olsen, there last year. And she is still smiling. Leading the pack of beautifully dressed ladies in (mostly) black at the 2012 Producers Guild Awards, was Angelina Jolie in Michael Kors lace. Jessica Chastain was glorious in Balenciaga black sequin and green stone jewellery - I just wish she would keep her hair classic. And Evan Rachel Wood played her masculine/feminine aesthetic to the max in her beautifully fitted suit.It really is my favourite look for her.

Then there were the ladies that brought a bit of colour to the proceedings. The magnificent Sofia Vergara was utterly devine in skin tight sequin Monique Lhullier and Viola Davis was sophisticated elegance personified in Hervé L. Leroux. Who was your favourite? Florence Welch's Vintage Swimwear Style

Florence Welch, of the brilliant Florence and the Machine, is off on her holidays somewhere hot and sunny where there is a waterfall and people frolicking. And she is wearing a stunning vintage style bikini and a turban. Yes, a turban. I love a turban.

Clearly keeping her perfect skin out of the sun, she danced in the waterfall and somehow kept her lipstick intact. It was almost like a styled photo shoot, it was so perfect.

And then she changed into a series of delightful silk kaftans. Both of which I would very much like to have myself. Look at the feathered fringing on the black. Check out her velvet slippers with the white/colour blocked. I am so incredibly envious of this swimwear style, I may just need to actualy go out and find the equivalents for myself. And a turban. Of course.

Jessica Chastain Shines in Monique Lhuillier

On Tuesday night, actress of the moment, Jessica Chastain, attended the premier of her movie Coriolanus. She wore a beautiful black lace dress with a train, designed by Monique Lhuillier and looked lovely with her hair loose and flowing softly in waves. This is a dramatic improvement on her Golden Globes disappointment of stiff Bride of Frankenstein hair and sleeveless poloneck dress. Say no more.

And, just to prove that that was a small but badly timed blip, here are two other images from this past week, with Jessica looking incredible. Good. As you were. Carry on.

Taylor Swift Covers US Vogue February 2012

Actually, if you have followed her for a while, you will know, like I do, that Taylor Swift has great style. Look, I am no country music fan. Nor do I have a yen for teenage girl heart-break songs. But as a young woman in the media spotlight, I have tracked her style. And it really is pretty good. So I am not that surprised that she has landed the cover of Anna Wintour's Vogue for the month of February.

And as much as I like the cover, I feel that the styling of the inside spread is actually a bit of a let down. It doesn't reflect anything of Taylor's own style in the images below, which is a trick missed.

It's kind of a boho version of what a fashion person thinks that a young country star should look like, rather than what it is in reality, which is actually quite interesting as Taylor plays with vintage, differest eras and styles in a much more modern way. This is all a but costumy in my opinion.

But no matter about this, it does mean that Taylor is on the higher grade fashion radar and I am looking forward to quietly following her style development over the next few years. I'll keep you guys all posted.

The Art of Elisium Heavan Gala

It was a busy week in Hollywood last week, what with all the Globes affairs. But somehow in amongst it all, the annual Art of Elisium Heaven benefit took place and attracted some very beautifully dressed peeps. Let's take a look at the best of these:
1. Minka Kelly in yellow Oscar de la Renta. I am blown away. I am so desperate for a yellow dress, I can't speak. That's all.
2. Brittany Snow - I don't know this actress that well, but boy do I want to get to know that dress a bit better. So beautiful and perfectly accessorised. Both these dresses are better than most of the Globes red carpet. Well, I think so.

There was also a plethora of white gowns, as has become standard on a red carpet. I think that I am largely over it, but here are the best of them:
1. Rachel Bilson in Chanel feathered finery. Pretty as a picture.
2. Ali Larter in sleek Valentino looking a million bucks and accessoried almost as well as Brittany above there. Nicely played. This is my fave way to wear white now.
3. Rose McGowen in Temperley London draped sweetly and made-up to match.

And finally there were the ladies in black dresses. Kirsten Dunst was, as ever, ethereal in sheer Valentino, my fave funny lady Rashida Jones in a print explosion looking chic and elegant and bad-ice-girl Michelle Trachtenberg in a froth of Marchesa tulle. They all look lovely, but for me, nothing can beat colour right now. So I am going Minka for the win. How about you?

Zooey Deschanel Covers Allure Magazine

You may or may not be aware of Zooey Deschanel. She is the adorable actress from the film 500 Days of Summer. She is also the star of the new TV series New Girl that I am hoping we will see on our screens soon. She looked fan-dabby-dozie at the Globes in her custom Prada dress and now she has been announced as the latest cover star of Allure magazine, playing up to her 'kooky' image.

Inside she shows off a more fashion-vibe in this 60s-styled shot. I really, really like it. I'd like to see her used some more in the fashion mags, please. Thanks.

The utterly sublime Charlize Theron covers the new edition of W Magazine. Apparently she is billed as speaking on the art of seduction. Yeah, I don't really think she needs art. Just look at her. And apparently she has the mouth of a sailor and a sense of humour to match. Now that's my girl.

Check out the inside spread too. Very seductive, it must be said. Also very beautiful. It may be overkill though. I mean, stick onse Charlize in a burlap sack and she will be seductive. You really don't need lacy knickers for that. Right? But we will enjoy the pretty anyway. Super.

Since Charlize Theron is on the cover of W magazine this month, it is no surprise that she turned up at their pre-Globes event. What was a surprise was that she was wearing Alexander McQueen from the spring 2012 collection. This is not one of her usual labels. But it is a win. I adore that lace detailing at the neckline. I also like it when she wears her hair loose and wavy. It is so pretty and relaxed. Just like onse Charlize.

Starting with this incredible yellow lace Stella McCartney dress that Charlize wore to the pre-BAFTAs event held in Hollywood late last week. I love the sunshine colour. I love the lace. I love the insets of mesh. I love the peplum and the scalloped edges. And I love what it looks like on Charlize. I score this look a solid 8.5/10. you?

Looks I Loved This Weekend: Non Globes Situations

And the Globes posts are over. Mostly. So let's get on with non-Golden Globe related fashion. From some of our favourites. Like Elizabeth Olsen. Goodness, I adore this creature of smiles. I don't know what she is wearing. But I love it. I am guessing it is a Stella McCartney jacket. I think I have seen her wear it before. But I want the whole look. And the sunshiney smile please. And just look at Ali Larter in that red jumpsuit? Amazing. I think that that bob did wonders for her style frankly. So much more chic. And the divine Solange Knowles in the green lace Dolce & Gabbana. See-through certainly. Sexy without question. Finally Emma Stone can do no wrong as far as I am concerned. A girl with a healthy sense of humour and impeccable style really does make me feel like we could be friends. Loads of people didn't like this look, but I am not one of them. Looks I Loved This Weekend: Golden Globes Edition

There were a whoooole lotta pre-Golden Globes parties that went on. And I only got sight of some of the outfits on the weekend. These are the ones that made my heart sing. Starting with Michelle Williams in Victoria by Victoria Beckham. Seriously. Can you get more adorable?? What a combo. And then there was a very awesome Claire Danes. This is a great silhouette on her. Donna Karan. Stark white (how I like it) with a navy belt and shoe situation. Deep v-neck. Perfection. I love Evan Rachel Wood's style. Particularly when she does the whole sexy-secretary thing. Like here. Hard to pull off. Powerful when you do. And then the utter delight that is Viola Davis. In turquoise. She should wear this colour all the time. She is like a ray of sunshine and it makes me happy beyond belief. Thanks Viola. Although Michelle still takes the win for the VB dress, obvs.

2012 Golden Globe Afterparties

The parties after the big awards ceremonies confuse me. Suddenly a whole load of people who had nothing to do with the awards turn up. Usually these are not logically tangental to the awards themselves. No. they are usually what the Brits call liggers. People who cruise the afterparty scene in order to get their pictures into papers and blogs. Well, job done peeps. Here are the best of the liggers. Starting with Kim Kardashian of course. Wearing a stunning Elie Saab dress, it needs to be said. And Lindsay Lohan, naturally. In Prada. And Paris and Nicky Hilton looking sophisticated and elegant. Hang on a second here folks. These liggers look GOOD. Well. What do I know?

And then there were those that actually looked awesome...and it wasn't a surprise. Like it-girl Felicity Jones in Valentino. This is how I like white dresses, people. And Jessica Alba, after her Lavender Gucci creation, managed to knock another one out the park at the after party. And then Rosie Huntington Whiteley arrived. In tuxedo pants. And a leather jacket. And looked cracking. Love this look.
I still don't understand the afterparty vibe. But apparently I also don't understand the reality TV folks either. All grown up. Maybe.

2012 Golden Globes Red Carpet Worst Dressed

OK, so I know that these choices are going to be a bit controversial. And in many cases here it is not so much 'worst dressed' as much as it is 'most disappointing'. I mean take that Prada dress that Freida Pinto is wearing. Nice in theory, but a total swamp-a-thon on such a delicate flower of a girl. That skirt looks like a quilted tent. And Julianna Margulies in purple Naeem Khan looks sleek and pretty but a box of shiny purple does not a dress make, ya know? If only Lea Michele would stop all that gurning and contorting on the red carpet then maybe we would stop confusing this Marchesa dress with a version of Halle Berry's Oscar winning dress, but alas, it is all too try-hard. And Madonna? I'm not sure that even Reem Acra (whose red carpet frocks I love) can figure out how to dress a Madonna. All a bit 'prom' for a fifty-year-old don't you think? And visible bra straps? Really?

And while I have no problem with white on the red carpet, it does require simplicity personified. It is always hard to make white in any other form look like anything else but a wedding dress. Or Miss Havisham. Both Amanda Peet and Jessica Biel veer toward the latter here in the mountains of lace that they donned for the event. And Jessica is wearing Elie Saab who is absolutely my favourite of all red carpet designers. Just not in this instance. Too, too much of the lace, right? And Jessica Chastain...how many times have I loved her looks recently? How many stunning dresses has she worn? And then when it counts she turns to the big guns, Givenchy, and somehow fails misterably. It may be that my absolute WORST is the sleeveless polo neck. HATE. And so hard to make boobs and a waist look elegant. I mean it isn't horrible. Just not good. And a terrible use of her lovely red hair.

Oh dear. And then those that weren't so much a disappointment as an outrage to fashion. I don't really know what to say about these rather generous monstrosities. Giant marshmellows of gowns that just hurt the eyes. Monique Lhullier designed that tie-dye dress that Sarah Michelle Gellar wore. And I watched her on the red carpet say that her two-year-old picked it out for her. Yes. Well. I can see that. We all can. Let's just forget we ever saw what Piper Perabo wore, shall we? What dress? Carry on. As you were. Nothing to see here.

2012 Golden Globes Red Carpet Best Dressed: The Best of the Best

So all day I have been teasing you with 2012 Golden Globes red carpet looks that have almost made my best dressed list. And now I present you with the ones that did make my heart sing. The ones that made my jaw drop. The ones that made me gasp and point at my screen in excitement. Starting with the very best of the very best:
First place: Dame Helen Mirren. OMG. How stunning? Seriously. How freaking stunning??? Badgley Mischka if you are asking. Damn.
Second place: Emma Stone in Lanvin. Check out that belt buckle. How cool is this chick?
Third place: Tilda Swinton. In the palest blue Haider Ackermann. Looking like a piece of art in human form. This is as good as it gets kids. I am in awe.

Forth place: Jessica Alba in lavender Gucci. As pretty as a picture. Not the most exciting but really, really pretty.
Fifth place: Kate Beckinsale looking as beautiful as I have ever seen the lady. In beaded white, dripping in diamonds, she definitely looked the best of the white dresses.

2012 Golden Globes Red Carpet Best Dressed in White(ish)

I don't often like Nicole Kidman's dresses, but this studded Versace number is perfection on her curves. Just look at the lady! And Amy Poehler really and truly looked the best she ever has in this Naeem Khan beaded confection (look out for Tina Fey photo bombing her on the red carpet when you watch - hilarious!) And then there is onse Charlize Theron. Looking a million bucks in her custom Dior. I put her in my very best dressed pile twice before relegating her back to the almost rans. Seriously. They are that good. Just watch. Also note Charlize's head band. Two words. On trend. She is amazing.

And while white is the trend, off-white, soft subtle nude and metallic shades, were also all the rage on the red carpet of the 2012 Golden Globes. Heidi Klum did Calvin Klein with an amazing neck piece. Julie Bowen looked like a princess fairy in that embellished shoulder gown (SO much better than those slinky numbers that emphasise her skinniness). Nicole Richie looked a gazillion bucks in her Julien McDonald. And Diane Lane definitely glittered in her gold Reem Acra gown with a deep v-neck.

2012 Golden Globe Red Carpet Best Dressed in Strawberry Shades

Again we have a selection of dresses from the 2012 Golden Globes that are lovely but not jaw dropping. I didn't gasp with delight at any of these, not withstanding their very juicy deliciousness. Natalie Portman went with Lanvin. Note the draped neckline that is very similar to Angelia's Versace. Interesting trend note. Dianna Agron's cut out Giles in blood red definitely made my heart flutter but there were no beats skipped. Reece Witherspoon's Jessica Rabbit style Zac Posen dress, but actually it left me a bit cold. I can see it is good, but I don't feel anything at all. Tina Fey makes me feel a whole lot. And this Oscar de la Renta gown is spectacular. But it all lands up looking a bit lumpy which is such a pity for one of the most brilliant and beautiful ladies.

And then there was Evan Rachel Wood. Almost there in this Gucci fishy number. She certainly looks amazing. And Laura Dern actually very, very nearly made my best dressed in this beaded green Andrew Gn with that little belt. In fact a swoonoed a little bit. And that custom Prada on Zooey Deschanel made the breath come a bit faster. And that slink of a green sequin Lorena Sarbu on Kelly MacDonald was sinply beautiful. But did any of them make my heart sing? Not quite. Did they make yours? Are you also holding out for the very best dressed of them all? Not long to wait now...

2012 Golden Globes Red Carpet: Best Dressed in Black and Blue (and Red)

Let's kick off the 2012 Golden Globe Awards red carpet coverage with the girl of the moment, Rooney Mara. Dressed simply and easily in Nina Ricci black. I'm thinking it could have been more impressive for the Globes but she does look lovely. And she has the hairstyle of the season - the pony tail. I have struggled with Salma Hayek's style recently - too much opportunity and not enough taste if I am honest - but look at this Gucci number on her. Perfection. Julianne Moore does the ideal combination of Chanel haute couture and emeralds and Mila Kunis represents as the new face of Dior beautifully. All these girls look lovely - but no show stoppers among the black dresses this year.

Then there is the blue dresses. How is it that my fantasy best friend, Sofia Vergara can make blue look like a vamp colour? I mean she poured herself into this Vera Wang gown and managed to look simultaenously sophisticated and sexy. I love her. As do straight men everywhere - anyone see Piers Morgan's tweets about this dress? And then there was cute Michelle Williams wearing a blue velvet Jason Wu gown and the THE accessory of the Globes, the hair band (see too on Charlize Theron).

And those that mixed things up were winners too. Claire Danes got lots of the early approval scores as she arrived in black and white J. Mendel. And Kate Winslet picked up her umteenth globe in this Jenny Packham belted gown. I love the shape but I really, really want to slap that look of Kate's face. Seriously! Angelina Jolie also stole some Globes red carpet thunder in this alternative silk monochrome dress - with the red accent as a point of difference. It is by Atelier Versace, of course and is beautiful. But I am not sure about matching lips, bag and dress... What about you?
So I loved all these frocks but were any of these my favourite favourite? No. You will have to see those later...

2012 Critics Choice Awards Red Carpet Best Dressed

I have helpfully sorted the gowns at the 2012 Critics Choice Awards, held last night in LA, into four clear red carpet trends for you. Let's start with the classics. Beautiful black dresses. Charlize Theron continues her reign of triumph on the red carpet with this tiered and scalloped Azzedine Alaia gown. Kirsten Dunst opted for a translucent Christian Dior dress, which suited her perfectly, and newly engaged Evan Rachel Wood wore a flocked Valentino strapless number. Nicely pitched all three of you.

There was also an interesting black and white moment on the red carpet when the majestic Tilda Swinton donned a three-piece YSL trouser ensemble and Michelle Williams did the exact same combination in blunt tones with her Chanel dress. They both looked successfully elegant, sophisticated and unsual, but I don't think that they could match the beauty of the Charlize dress above.

Colour hit the carpet just like it did at the People's Choice awards on Wednesday evening. Simple, clean and bold is the way to do colour this season, although cutie-pie Emma Stone did mix things up a bit in her green on-trend Jason Wu dress. She is such a clever lady with regards her style. Always looking approprite, but never looking predictable. Jessica Chastain was super-surprising in this pink Balenciaga halter dress. I actually love it a lot. Almost as much as I liked that pink dress on Ginnifer Goodwin at the People's Choice. Almost. But not quite. And then Busy Phillips, Michelle Williams' bestie, and Cougar Town star, looked astonishingly good in her red floor sweeper. Usually I find her style a bit all-over-the-shop, but this is magnificent. Well played lady.

And then there was this super-interesting trend. Sherbet lemon as a colour accent, paired with grey. And I LOVE IT. Diane Kruger nailed it in her stunning Prada gown. I actually feel the need to weep with pleasure at this dress. OMG. And adorable little Elizabeth Olsen in that super-fun mini dress followed suit, from the house of Prada. What a win. Sadly Elle Fanning's attempts to capture this trend were a disaster in this Rodarte number. But that is just my opinion. Others loved it. So there you are. Which was your pick of the bunch? I think I am going with the fresh sorbet delight of Diane's Prada. What about you?

Revlon's New Campaign, Featuring Halle Berry, Emma Stone and Olivia Wilde

Congrats to Halle Berry who got engaged over the holidays to Olivier Martinez, and whose new campaign for Revoln was launched. Winning.

Also in the new campaign are fresh faces Olivia Wilde and Emma Stone. Both hot young actresses with new movies out this year and nominations for awards. I mean launching this kind of thing just in time for awards season is super smart.

The campaign is a bit 70s looking for my taste, but maybe that is to capture that trend rather than it being dated, as such. Who knows with that sort of thing. Do you like it?

Dita von Teese Kicks Back in Casual Style

When I saw this picture the first thought that popped into my mind was, "oh, so this is how Dita von Teese does casual!" Which is a point, right, since we always see her in beautiful dresses and gowns, immaculate make-up and not a hair out of place. And here she is in trousers. Cropped trousers, at that. With a jumper. Although let's be honest, that's all that is different. The make up and hair are all in place. Perfectly.

And then I saw this picture. In flats!! In what looks something like gym gear. Hair and make-up in place, naturally. So what do you think? You like Dita au-casual? I think she totally rocks it like she does everything else. The real test would be to see her without make-up. Then we would be talking.

Alexa Chung for Vero Moda (Again)

So aside from the fact that these are lovely pictures of our girl Alexa Chung, this is an interesting tie up with Vero Moda that deserves a nod. Vero Moda is a somewhat stuffy European label that has used Alexa over the past year to move from this brand positioning to one that is arguably fashionable, border-line hipster. I mean, that is some kind of brand shift I have to say.

Shooting images for their campaign in hipster-ville, Williamsburg, New York - where Alexa now resides - is next level canny.

As is allowing Alexa to style herself to some extent - to pull through her own very recogisable style into the brand and let her work their pieces up to look like this.

As is making the most gorgeous brogues I have seen for a long time.

As is timing the launch of the new campaign with the lanuch of Alexa's new TV show in America, 24 Hour Catwalk.

So it is a solid 'very well played' that must go out to Vero Moda. And a heartfelt sorry to my readers like Cynthia who are not on board with my book club mate. It's ok. I would never excommunicate you for hot loving Alexa. Victoria definitely, but not Alexa...

2012 People's Choice Awards Best Dressed

There were two main trends on the People's Choice Awards red carpet, colour and no colour. And there were stand outs in both categories. Starting with my favourites - the colour shots, we have Ginnifer Goodwin in Roksanda Ilinic. POW. What about Jennifer Lawrence in Viktor + Rolf? A slightly braver and more daring choice, but it works. And Kirsten Bell in dressed-down classic red Valentino - but in lace and leather. Another cute girl who mixed things up a bit was winner Emma Stone, who went with a Gucci trouser suit with an emerald green jacket. And sticking with green, we see an Elie Saab hit the carpet on another winner, Nina Dobrev. Of the colour looks, I have to say that my fave is the utter simplicity of the Roksanda Ilinic pink dress.

But there was also some pale stunners on the red carpet last night. Jennifer Morrison absolutely wowed me in this white Oscar de la Renta macrame dress. Mylie Cyrus was all grown up and unexpectedly chic and interesting in newer designer David Korma, complete with drapes, cut ots and day-glo perspex detailing. And Big Bang Theory's Kelly Cuoco was utterly sublime (if slightly over dressed) in a Badgley Mischka floor sweeper. Oscar de la Renta takes the pale win, but can't compete with the vibrance of the pink for the over-all best dressed prize.

Forevermark and InStyle's Golden Globe Event Best Dressed: Michelle Williams

It is so weird. Do this blogging job for long enough and you start to notice a pattern. And not a logical one at that. Some events people look amazing. And some events, people just generally don't. The pre-Golden Globe event held by InStyle is one of those events where choosing your best dressed presents you with slim pickings. I mean REALLY slim pickings. The only person who looked really awesome was Golden Globe nominated Michelle Williams. Dressed beautifully and simply in head to toe Versace. Yes, I used simple and Versace in the same sentance. Believe it. The dress, the shoes, the belt. A triumph of restrained style.

Earlier, Michelle had turned out in a ridiculously cute 70s style leather button-through skirt and striped top. Wouldn't mind that in my wardrobe, I don't mind saying. You?

Behati Prinsloo for Princess Tam Tam Spring 2012

Southern African model, Behati Prinsloo was here in Cape Town this holiday season. And by all accounts (by which I mean her Twitter) she had a blast here in the African sun. But she is back at work now, and yesterday they released her campaign that she shot with photographer Jan Welters for Princess Tam Tam underwear.

If you need the perfect balance between cute and sexy for your campaign, Behati is the bomb. Nice, natural and beautiful, Behati brings her genuinely boho sensibility to everything she does. And it is like a freah breath of hot African air. Loves it.

National Board of Review Gala Best Dressed

It was the National Board of Review Gala this weekend. I have no idea what that is, to be honest. Do we care? Not a jot, when all we really want to look at is the dresses. (Or in the magnificant Tilda Swinton's case, a shimmer of purple all tied up in what I assume is a Haider Ackermann trouser outfit. Love.) Jessica Chastain ramped up in a Zac Posen dress that I kind of adore. I like high contrast and this sure gives us that. Naomi Watts was elegant and sophisticated in one of the nicest Stella McCartney dresses I have seen all year (and great shoes) and Emma Stone kept things classic in white J.Mendel. That splash of lippie of the glitter shoes elevate the look just sufficiently without going gaudy. Nobody likes gaudy.

And then there were the ladies in black. The Clooney's girl, Stacy Keibler, all togged up in Marchesa actually looked pretty and groomed (although slightly over tanned next to all the other best dressed ladies, it really does need to be said). Dame Helen Mirren was looking incredible in black velvet. Seriously, can I be her when I grow up? And Keira Knightly looked sweet in Nina Ricci. New girl to watch, Felicity Jones, was all smouldering and peaches-and-cream-sexy in Dolce & Gabbana. Good showing ladies.

And then there was one of my favourite favourites, Carey Mulligan. In blush pink belted Lanvin with a fabulous shoe. The kind of shoe I wish Kate Middleton would wear, you know? Nice. Time to pick your best look. And.....go.

Angelina Jolie in Leather at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards

Sometimes I think that Angelina Jolie is a bit dull in her dress. Classy, elegant, but a bit dull. And then she does something like this. Pulls out a leather skirt. Puts it on with a white silk blouse. Throws on an emerald or two. And no one can touch her for style. Perfection. It is amazing. She attended the New York Film Critics Circle Awards with her man Brad Pitt this week looking wonderful like this.

Also in attendance and looking beautiful was Jessica Chastain. Breakout star of this awards season and very pretty red head. She gets it right a lot, but also verges slightly on the totally expected. The colour and shine of this Lyn Devon dress was a surprise. And the sparkly Jimmy Choos a really modern, on-trend treat. Goodie.

Audi Celebrates the Golden Globe Awards 2012: Best Dressed

Yay! It's awards season!! I am a bit beside myself with joy as we look forward to next week when we will be analysing the red carpet from the Golden Globes and picking our favourites - and arguing over it all. The whole season kicked off this past weekend with a shindig hosted by Audi. Best dressed at the affair was Zoe Saldana in this black midi Jason Wu frock with a wonderful neck detail.

Also looking spectacular - from a totally different angle - is colour-tastic Anne Heche in this dazzling Salvatore Ferregamo draped gown. It is always a blast when there is strident colour on the carpet that really works. Love it.

From the younger set there was one of my personal 90210 favourites, Jessica Lowndes. She was in a silver grey Katherine Kidd princess dress. Nicely played ladies. Now let's see what you have for us next weekend. Can't wait. Bring on the Globes!

Is Louis Bullock The Best Dressed Kid At School?

It is the first day of the school year for many. And there is no doubt your school experiences - whether in or out of uniform - strongly inform your initial ideas on style and fashion. But I will bet that there is no kid at school this morning who looks as unbearably cute as this wee chap, Louis Bullock, son of the wondrous Sandra Bullock. Check out that flat cap. That orange puffer gillet. Those chinos. That face..... Oh dear. This makes me a bit broody, peeps.

I can understand why there is a Lana del Rey backlash. I mean it is all so damn perfect isn't it? Stunning, sultry, sexy music. A 25-year-old pillow-lipped singer. Her yen for fashion and quirky style. The monikers incluing 'a gangster Nincy Sinatra' I mean it is all so damn perfect. And then you see this spread for the latest V Magazine. How can someone so beautiful also make such unimaginably lovely music?

But she does. And she is just about to release her first album. She says nothing much has changed - other than she now plays to an appreciative audience. I'll bet she also gets much nicer clothes too. Just saying. Do you like it?

New SA Designer: Natalie Creed SS12

Ok, so here's the thing young designers, stylists, etc. You have to be careful what you wish for. I get a whole pile of emails every week from you and your kin, showing me your latest collections or shoots or designs or links to things you have done. You ask me to post on them, feature them, check them out and sometimes even for my opinion - although this is very, very rare. Because mostly, you see, you think what you are sending me is amazing. Else you wouldn't be sending it. And sometimes it is. But mostly it isn't. Sorry guys. But I look and then I politely ignore it for fear of crushing your spirit. And then every so often, I actually take the time out of my very busy two-job day and provide you with constructive and considered feedback. And mostly you are unhappy about that. Because you think that what you sent me was amazing. Sigh.

But every now and again I really do like what I see. Occasionally I find that rare gem in the pile of emails. And I do actually like it and post on it. Well, what do you know.

Here are some images from Natalie Creed's new summer collection. I think that the pieces are sweet. And nicely interesting. Commercial, of course. But pretty and easy. But mostly I like the styling. Such a lovely, gentle shoot and therefore worth my while to add to my blog. Well done Natalie Creed. You were not rubbish. All the best and I look forward to following your fashion path.

Carey Mulligan in The Row, Isabel Marant and Salvatore Ferregamo

This look may seem low key and casual, and that's just the way that Carey Mulligan likes it. But actually it is action packed full of the most fashion forward designers. Let's start with that jacket from the Olsen twins line The Row. Brushed silk tuxedo style in a deconstructed way. Perfect for dress-down business wear. And those jeans? They are only Isabel Marant, the casual wear designer of the moment. And if that wasn't enough, those cute little ballet pumps are from the newly energised luxury brand stalwart, Salvatore Ferregamo. That is quite a power punch of casual right there.

Of course much of the attention was distracted from this perfect power pairing but the fashion faux pas of having the label still stuck to the bottom of the shoe. I personally find it endearing - how many of us have done the same? But the fashion press were outraged. How do you feel about this slip up? Does it spoil the look for you? Let us know.

Mulberry Spring/Summer 2012 Campaign

God, I love this lable Mulberry. I love their youthful joie de vivre. Their playfulness. Paired with their grown up aesthetic. I love their clothes quite a lot. But I love their handbags more. So much more. An actual love affair. I have three of them that I have saved and bought over the years. And now, with the launch of their SS12 campaign, I love them just a little bit morer. You know. A LOT.

I mean how charming is this Brighton beach situation with the giant ice cream cone and Brighton Rock? If you thought candy stripes of summer were over, think again. This campaign puts them firmly back on the agenda. Awesome.

FOX All Star Party Best Dressed

The FOX network had a little shindig this weekend, with all the stars of their best programming turning up and looking gorgeous. It was called the FOX All Star Party, and the cast of Glee were turing up the style quotient and laying down the fashion gaunlet, so to speak. Starting with the wonderful Jayma Mays who wore Burberry Porsum. Love it! And Lea Michele who wore that turquoise Peter Son and her hair looking partiularly nice. Jenna Ushkowitz kept things simple in red hot red but added the impact with that great neck piece. A personal favourite of mine, Natalie Zea, was in a perfect shade of blue and Zooey Deschanel was all kinds of cute in black and white - I just wish she had lost the weird bag and hair bow, but I love the dress.

But this entire post is just an excuse to post a pic of my dearest love, Pacey Witter. Joshua Jackson was there to support his show, Fringe and Keifer Sutherland announced that they begin shooting 24 the movie in a few months time. But back to Pacey. Isn't he just a dish?
So who was best dressed, aside from my man? I'm going to go for Jayma's Burberry. Any advances on that?

Looks I Loved This Weekend: The Colour Issue

They all are really. Colour issues. It's just that these ones made me happy. I mean that brilliant apple green that Charlize Theron is wearing in a dress by Reed Krakoff. If I could love her more I would. But I think I already love her to the max. Mila Kunis is so definitely a one to watch this year. And this Prabul Gurung frock further emphasises this. It does make her look a smidge bigger than she really is, but the scalloped plunging v-neck and those shoes more than make up for it. And of course the colour. It is the absence of colour that draws me to Nicole Richie's awesomely cool outfit here. I mean who else would get away with a pair of beaded leggings and a tuxedo jacket (looks like a Stella McCartney) and then there is Meryl Streep in that midnight blue coat over an elegant dress - which definitely is Stella McCartney - and that stunning neckpiece. Class - pure and simple. Who is your favourite for the week. I'm double dosing on Charlize. Too much? You let me know.

The most stylish of the girls from the Twilight movie franchise is Ashley Greene. This has been noted by the fashion industry and they have justly rewarded her with a brand new campaign for DKNY spring summer 2012. Here she is in her first executions for the hand bags. What do you think?

I like them. A bit derivative - we have seen this kind of thing before. But nice. She looks just the right side of model for it not to look too actressy. Well played lady Ashley.

23rd Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala Best Dressed

This weekend saw the awards gala of the 23rd Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. Here are the highlights. Winners included Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst, Jessica Chastain and the film Melencholia. Brad arrived using a walking stick after a ski accident. Angelina Jolie accompanied Brad and wore a beautifully simple, backless Elie Saab dress.

In addition to those highlights, best dressed of the evening included Olivia Wilde's new haircut, dressed in black Monique Lhullier. Michelle Williams in bead-encrusted Prada and perfect make up. Onse Charlize Theron in the perfect Lanvin little black dress with a thigh split that possibly only she could get away with. And Jessica Chastain in a pretty green and black cocktail dress that off-set her lovely hair. My pick of the best of the best? Going to go with Charlize. Sculptured beauty. And you?

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, in Black Lace Temperley London

At the Royal premier of the new Steven Spielberg movie, War Horse, held last night, Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, wore a stunning, floor-length, black lace dress with a nude underlay by Temperley London - designed by Alice Temperley.

This is not Kate's first Temperley rodeo, having worn the lable several times in the past. But it is her first formal evening affair, and it was a triumph. Of course the lace scalloped neckline reminded me of her wedding dress and that brought some happiness. And the velvet ribbon waistband was a beautiful touch - one that she picked up on in her clutch. Fitted to perfection, this was weather-appropriate, occasion-appropriate and totally on the mark for style. Well played K-Middy. Again.
